Our COVID-19 Response at Elder Care Homecare. Read Now
Choking can be a terrifying experience, especially when the person in distress is in a wheelchair. The situation becomes even more complex if the individual is elderly.
In this blog post, we'll provide
step-by-step instructions on how to help someone choking in a wheelchair. Remember, the first thing to do in such situations is to check if there's a doctor around. If not, then follow the steps below.
First, confirm the person is choking. Look for universal signs like clutching the throat, inability to talk, or difficulty breathing.
Stand to the side and slightly behind the person. Provide support by placing one arm across their chest. Lean the person forward and give five back blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
If the person is still choking, perform abdominal thrusts. Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waist, and make a fist. Place the thumb side of your fist slightly above the person's navel. Grab your fist with the other hand and press hard into the abdomen.
If the choking doesn't stop, call 911 immediately. Having an emergency response team on the way while you attempt to clear the obstruction.
Keep doing back blows and abdominal thrusts until the object is out; the person can cough forcefully, speak, or breathe.
