How Can Elder Care Homecare help New York Seniors Through the Pandemic?

Mar 30, 2021

When I think of senior New Yorkers, I always picture a generation of people dressed to the nines, wearing suits, driving old-school cars, and going to Broadway plays. The Boomers. The Frank Sinatras, Ray Charles', and Marilyn Monroes of the world. Our Idols.

These folks grew up during an era of war, survived through an economic depression, worked their way back up to the top, got to watch Babe Ruth throw his last pitch, and still made it home every day by supper. That is if they were not participating in happy hours, of course.

The Baby Boomers are a generation that is family- orientated and social. Gatherings were the only way to adequately socialize as they did not have the technology we have today. Even though they are older, the one thing they will always need is socialization and activity. Socialization is an integral part of general happiness, and those who are happier tend to live longer!

What can we do to help you and our Elder New Yorkers through this Pandemic; still socialize, be entertained, and maintain their safety?

Listed below are four ways you and Elder Care can help:

  • Limit Visitors: This may seem contradictory to the socialization emphasis, but what I mean by limit visitors is to make sure you do not just allow anyone to visit. Keep the list of visitors to a minimum.

Make sure each visitor is tested frequently for Covid-19, always wears a mask, and if touching anything, wears gloves as well.

Elder Care Homecare Inc. has caregivers available who are tested regularly for Covid-19 and some who have taken the Covid-19 Vaccine eliminating potential exposure. The company also follows strict CDC protocols and guidelines.

  • Sanitize: I know that sounds like common sense! Please sanitize. You have probably doused the entire home in bleach at this point and may even do that daily. Sanitizing, though, is not just about cleaning your seniors' home. That is a massive part of it, of course, but making sure your elder is washing their hands, bodies, and face consistently is also essential.

Elder Care Homecare Inc. has caregivers trained in proper personal care procedures, including the use of PPE, and encouraging those who have dementia to stay clean and sanitized. They are also well-versed in housekeeping and keeping homes tidy, eliminating the risks of Covid-19.

  • Keep in Touch: Technology has helped with adding so many ways of communicating with one another. We have phones, tablets, laptops, all with audio, and most have cameras. Use those! Teach your elder how to use one of these devices and keep in touch. Make them smile on facetime, send them a video of their grandchildren through text, and remember to call on special occasions always.

Write them a letter if you want to get old-school!

Elder Care Homecare Has caregivers that are well-versed in teaching and helping seniors use technology to keep in touch with families. They also make great companions and are willing and able to help write letters or send emails for their clients.

  • Activities: Going out in public currently may not be something your senior wants to do now, considering the circumstances and the risk exposure of being around people they may not know. Not going out much; limits activities like bingo nights, grocery shopping, going to see a movie, and even religious functions.

Bring Bingo to them! Have a family Bingo Night. Delivery for their Groceries or order for them online. Let them pick and choose recipes and make creating the shopping list a fun experience. Teach them how to use Netflix or head on over for a movie night at their place. Teach them how to attend religious functions through video or live streaming.

Elder Care Home Care Inc employs caregivers that know how to engage with seniors in their homes. Our caregivers: meal prep, plan game nights, plan movie nights, read books, and make sure that our seniors never feel lonely!

Elder Care Homecare of New York is an exceptional Private Duty home care agency that employs quality caregivers to keep our seniors stay healthy, happy, and engaged. Let us help you and help our New York seniors through this Pandemic.

With its many features and applications, smartphones can greatly enhance our lifestyles. This is especially true for our senior citizens. Teaching elderly citizens to use a smartphone can open up new avenues of communication, entertainment, and health monitoring. This blog post is a practical guide for caretakers who want to help their elderly loved ones navigate the world of smartphones and enhance their senior lifestyle. Let's get started! What to Cover When Teaching Your Elders How to Use Their Smartphones Basic Phone Features Every smartphone's operating system differs, so it's important to start with the basics that apply to the specific phone your elder is using. Show them how to make and receive calls, send messages, and adjust settings like volume and brightness. Photo Sharing and Video Calls Teach them to capture memories with the camera feature. Show them how to take photos, view them, delete unwanted ones, and share them with family and friends. Additionally, introduce them to video calling. It's vital to discuss video call etiquette, like asking the other person if they're available for a video call before starting one. Entertainment Apps Apps like YouTube can be a treasure trove of entertainment. From old songs and movies to informative documentaries, YouTube can keep seniors engaged and entertained for hours. Health and Wellness Apps Smartphones can also serve as health monitoring devices. Show them how to use apps that track heartbeats, steps, and sleep patterns. These features can be crucial in maintaining a healthy senior lifestyle. Navigating Social Media Social media platforms can help seniors stay connected with their loved ones and the world. However, it's important to teach them about social media safety, such as identifying potential scammers and understanding online interactions' basic do’s and don'ts. Let's Bridge the Digital Gap Together We all want our elderly loved ones to be independent, connected, and engaged in today's digital world. Communication plays a crucial role in caregiving for individuals with dementia. However, dementia can significantly impact communication skills, memory, focus, language skills, visual perception, and problem-solving abilities. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience difficulty finding words, understanding meanings, paying attention, and remembering steps in activities. They may also become confused about language and rely on the first language they learned. Expressing needs, emotions, and thoughts can become challenging for them. It is important for caregivers to be aware of these challenges and adjust their communication strategies accordingly.

Understanding Stress in Senior Citizens Stress is a natural response to challenges or demands that individuals experience. In the context of senior citizens, stress refers to the emotional and physiological strain that can arise due to various factors. Seniors may experience stress due to coping with loss, worrying about health decline, financial concerns, changes in living arrangements, or social isolation. It is important to understand that stress can have negative impacts on seniors' health, including an increased risk of heart disease, weakened immune system, depression, memory loss, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and impaired cognitive function. Therefore, proper stress management is crucial for seniors as their bodies may have a reduced ability to cope with stress compared to younger individuals. By managing stress effectively, seniors can improve their overall well-being and quality of life.
